Going full speed is fun. And if memory serves me right, my physics teacher told me that once a body is in motion, it likes to stay in motion. I can second that. Once you’re in a creative flow, you…well…flow. Sometimes that flow is so powerful it becomes self-perpetuating. It isbeautiful, it’s intoxicating, but it is also blinding.
Because while you’re going full speed, you inevitably get tunnel vision. Important things that you would normally never, ever pass by unnoticed become vague spots, stripped from their true meaning. You know you should give them proper attention, but you don’t.
They are sidelined, fall to the bottom of the priority list. You’ll get them done one day, just not now. Especially not now, because you’re on a roll, remember. They’ll understand, you say to yourself. There’s still time, you can hear that little voice going, there’s still time. And you convincingly tell yourself that any moment is fine, except this one.
Else said, I can be a tremendously nonchalant man. And the trouble is that I don’t notice it while I’m doing it until someone steps up and confronts me with it. That someone would most probably be the person I just ran by or over at full speed, being in my flow and all.
That just happened again. I didn’t see it coming. Of course not. Tunnelvision.
Yet, regardless of my intentions being benign, when my postponed to-do becomes a broken promise in the eyes of someone else, then I have failed that person. Miserably. The response you get, after all, is the meaning of your message. And believe me, I got the message.
Question: Do you know what you call a person who stops you in your tracks and bluntly confronts you with your ugly side, hard and uncensored?
Answer: A friend.
