After yesterday's post "When do I fail, when do I succeed" I felt like trying to answer another question I've been getting quite a lot the past year, regarding Pinching the Ostrich.

Why indeed. Have you ever felt you needed to pursue something, but you couldn’t really figure out why? You just needed to do it, knowing that there would be consequences impossible to foresee, knowing that your lack of an answer to that question “why?” would be considered proof of the senselessness and irrelevance of your actions. But you did it/are doing it anyway.
I do this because I can. I just haven’t figured out how yet.
I know that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, so let me put it this way. Have you ever asked a young child that’s about to go to elementary school what he/she is going to do in school after the summer?
You’ll probably get answers like: “I’m gonna learn to count one thousand hundred and hundred and million.” or “ I’m gonna read words and fairytale books.” That young sould has only one thing on its mind: learn and discover for the sake of learning and discovering.
But what happens when that kid finally goes to elementary school? How long does it take before the love of learning is replaced by the drive towards good grades or fear of bad ones. Their intrinsic motivation for discovering the world and their own potential is surgically removed from their hearts and replaced by a number or character somewhere in the left hemisphere of their brain. They are no longer rewarded for their love for knowledge and experiences, they are graded. Big difference.
Which, by the way, is NOT how the world works. If it did, then why are so many schools, companies and whole societies struggling to keep people motivated, regardless whether you call them students or staff?
In general, the way we are graded and paid, rewards us out of our intrinsic motivation. We are rewarded away from our love to do something for the sake of doing it. The end result: We loose our afinity with the creative "how" and end up with "why" even bother in the first place.
Now, take a wild guess what the number one trait is of people who make a real difference in this world, the kind of difference that matters: Yes indeed. It’s intrinsic motivation. It’s finding what you love and do it, regardless whether it brings in money or not.
You can have lengthy debates on how economically viable this is, which is something I would be happy to attend. But I do challenge you to find one single invention or creative (r)evolution that came into being without passion, without relentless effort, without a near endless series of falling down and picking one self up again, just for the sake of doing it, discovering and exploring things. These changes came into being because someone wasn’t bothered by “why” but focused on “how”.
I do not know where PtO is going to take me. I do not know whether this is economically viable. I do not know whether the route I’m taking isn’t a dead end. But I do know that without cherishing the intrinsic value of creativity, nothing creative is going to happen. I need to create for the love of it.
I do not know what it is I need to do to make creativity relevant to my life, to creatively reclaim reality, to make a difference. But I do know I will have to discover and experience like that kid I once was, in order to get where ever it is I need to arrive.
I do this because I can. I just haven’t figured out how yet.
