Have you ever attended a brainstorm? Not the kind where idea generation is being paid loads of lip service, but a real one, one for the books. If you have you will undoubtedly have recognized two phenomena: 1) a point in time where the ideas bouncing of the walls are so far out of the box, that no one remembers there was a box to begin with and 2) a collective feeling and energy generated by this mental leapfrogging that radiates so much blind trust in your own potential, that makes you realize that this part of the process was exactly what you needed to move forward.
Sometimes that feeling won't go away. Sometimes it stretches your mind in such a way that your thinking cannot and will not return to its original state. In fact that feeling can be so overwhelming that you just have to act on it. It's as if there is no other option than to give into following your heart.
On August 15th I was fortunate enough to experience what such a mindjob can trigger.
Meet Angélique Schmeinck. Angélique is one of the two female master chefs in The Netherlands. She has been fascinated by every aspect of taste and flavour ever since she realized what taste meant for her and could mean to others.
During a course on creativity she did a brainstorm that lead her into this state of mind where only possibility reigns. This is what she and the other course participants came up with something along the lines of: "You could cook your food in the hot air of a hot air balloon and have diner while you fly." Any average person would be happy to start converging again at that point to end up safely on the ground, both literally and figuratively speaking…but not Angélique. She actually did it and is doing it on a regular basis.
Her concept is called "CuliAir" and it makes her the proud owner of the one and only hot air balloon restaurant in the world. She doesn't just take a few things to bite along for the journey, she prepares her Michelin star quality food for her flabbergasted guests, in the oven above her head. She pulls the food up in patented baskets and lets the balloon work his hot air magic.
To cut a very long and exhilarating story very short: the view is spectacular, the food is spectacular, the atmosphere in the basket is spectacular, the feeling of comradeship between the guests is spectacular, the entire concept is friggin' supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. And all because Angélique succeeded where so many other seem to fail: to think in terms of possibilities, period. That is all it took and takes.
I for one was honored to join her on one of her CuliAir flights. I was ecstatic to experience first hand what creative thinking can do to and for people, once you get past a "yes, but…" way of thinking and living. It makes so much sense once you are there. Once you believe it, you will see it!
