But last night, at about half past midnight, I most definitely had sucha moment. Last night I shot my first painting-with-light compositionPinching the Ostrich style. This is the shot.
This is taken at the former Antwerp Province Hall, a historic building that became a Peace Center in the 80's. It is the first of many historic locations to come where Gerry O'Leary's challenge "paint with light" has come into being.
As you may remember, Gerry gave me three months to figure out that photography is all about composing with light. That was it and so I've been fooling around with the camera, talking to amateurs and professionals, attending lectures, reading books, taking pics (duh!) and brewing on getting back at Gerry in a way I hope will blow him away. I don't know about him – it's not until October for him to come with a verdict – but last night was heavenly.
This shot took two days of preparation in man hours: mailing, calling and seeing people, scouting the place, fiddling with light sources, experimenting up front at home, checking numerous sources online about light painting, problems with long exposure noise, finding inspiration, etc etc.
And then there was the shot itself. There are no less than 8 completely different light sources in this picture, switched on and off consecutively, and has an exposure time of no less than 8 minutes 36 seconds seconds.
There is no Photoshop involved, no post-production magic, no HDR, no nothing. It was over an hour of preparation on location and 1 single shot, only 1. And this is what came out! I went officially nuts when I saw the result and couldn't help but sharing already.
There are more pictures to come, plus the story behind each and every location. There is a story of people sharing their knowledge, opening their hearts, minds and doors.
It took me two hours to get the adrenaline out of my system and go to sleep and in the morning a few new ideas for the next shoot lay on my pillow…else said…stay tuned.
