When I set out on my ‘Pinching the Ostrich’ journey little over six months ago, one of the goals was – and still is of course – to have at least 10.000 people out there telling me and each other about their own ‘ostrich pinching’ spree. I doesn’t really matter what shape or size their ostrich is, as long as they think it is well worth the effort to pinch him in the buttocks, get his head out of the sand and have him take a good look around to finally discover what had been there all along:
It doesn’t matter what their ostrich relates to: a personal fear, a dormant dream, a business endeavour, learning how to say ‘Yes’…or ‘No’ for that matter, finally picking up that instrument, changing the culture in your department, going for that degree, pursuing that idea that has been grinding in the back of your head, the one no one believes in or possibly even gets or knows about. Or it could be a seemingly trivial thing such as getting behind the wheel of the car once again, as Petra did.
Petra is a Canadian women,whose life got turned upside down when she lost her husband to lung cancerafter being happily married for 28 years. She was there when he passed away. She was there, trying to breath life into him, to no avail. As she courageously wrote to me in an email, she quite understandably lost all self-confidence after that terrible day. She didn’t even feel confident enough anymore to drive a car. But yesterday she suddenly did. Something, somehow propelled her into action.
She wrote it was after reading the website, but I find that hard to believe. Websites don’t magically heal a hurt as deep as Petra’s. And it doesn’t take a weird Belgian guy to suddenly pinch whatever it is you need pinching.
What Petra did, she did all by herself. SHE took the wheel of her car and drove off. And from the looks of it, she isn’t just taking the wheel of her car again, she’s taking the wheel of her life, steering it towards…well, that’s for her to decide. Although I’m sure it’s a pretty fine place.
Sometimes the first step towards discovering your own vastly creative potential is the very same step you take outside your comfort zone. You can learn all there is to know about creativity and still you’d end up clueless as to what it all means…until you take that first step.
And even though we don’t always get to choose what’s on our path, we always, no matter what, have a choice how we respond to it. Remember the definition of ‘Pinching the Ostrich’? “The ongoing process of creating choice over accepting circumstance, by surfacing and challenging hidden assumptions.” Probably without being aware of it, that’s exactly what Petra has been doing since that very sad day. And once that process becomes conscious, intentional, deliberate, a whole new world of possibilities reveals itself.
There’s only one catch. There’s no way back. Trust me, once you’ve taken that first step, you don’t want to go back even if you could. I’m sure Petra agrees.
