No disrespect, but I’m fed up with Einstein. I’m tired of hearing he is the personification of the creative genius, especially because practically no one knows why exactly. OK, he formulated the theory of general and special relativity. Cool, whatever. Do YOU know what they are? Do you understand them? Can you explain them? And if you do and can, could you tell just how exactly this makes our lives more enjoyable and meaningful?
Chances are you – just as most of us – haven’t got a clue what his work is actually all about, but we do know that he was a frightfully creative person. And why dowe know that? Because everyone says he is, which including the scientifically illiterate mob that honours Einstein’s memory by collecting posters, t-shirts and quotes.
Mind you, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that, it just seems a little…awkward. Imagine Einstein sitting at his desk in 1905, taking a break while making the final corrections to his groundbreaking papers. He takes a look outside his office window and says to himself: “You can do this, Albert. And if things work out, you’ll have your own apparel and clothing line.”
I’m just wondering. Did the man ever aim to be creative? Was being recognised as a creative genius the motivation that got him out of bed and into his shed every single day. Was creativity was his goal? Should it be ours?
Who are we doing a favour when we idolize a person to such an extent that his myth sidelines the contribution that made him eligible for his never-sought-after-stardom in the first place?
Surely Einstein is an inspiration. Unless we have put him on such a high pedestal that even Einstein reborn wouldn’t be able to tread in his own footsteps. Else said, even Einstein wasn’t an Einstein until we said he was. That’s not inspiration, that’s intimidation. How’s that ever going to make people genuinely believe in their own creative potential?
Creativity is in the eye of the beholder and the beholder needs a wack against his head. He should be tired of hearing about Einstein. Just as he should be fed up with the rest of the usual suspects: Fleming’s penicillin, 3M’s post-it notes, Edison’s light bulb, Darwin’s Origin of Species, Newton’s apple…and all the other creative feats that are soaring beyond his reach just because he decided that they are.
Time to decide something different!
