The last few weeks I was getting the feeling that I was somehow slacking. That somehow, I had more difficulties getting into the flow of things. I noticed I had to deal with a little more self-doubt, self-criticism and less focus. Nothing dramatic, but noticeably there. My energy was more scattered, if you will. So in the spirit of pinching things, I wondered why that was. I pulled out my agenda, journals, blogposts and such and there it was. I have been neglecting my healthy eating habits and exercise.
That made me look to the past few years to see whether I came across this before and guess what, I did. There would seem to be a strong relationship between my ability to spend my time and energy on moving forward in life and the way I take care of myself physically. I know that sounds like a complete no-brainer, but that's the thing with ostriches isn't it? Someone else's are so darn easy to spot, yet your own are the near invisible ones.
It's amazing how much of the time you take your own way of being for granted. Even if that way of doing things isn't helping us. Especially then! It is in fact stupendously hard not to do that.
Sir Ken Robinson put it like this in his book "The Element": "Part of the problem with identifying the things we take for granted is that we don't know what they are because we take them for granted in the first place. They become basic assumptions that we don't question, part of the fabric of our logic. We don't question them because we see them as fundamental, as an integral part of our lives. Like air. Or gravity. Or Oprah." (The Element, p30)
So how do you resist all those temptations that would have you fall of the wagon, someone asked me a couple of weeks ago. Well, apparently, I don't. They are creepy little bastards sneaking up on you, hiding in your blind spots, waiting for that one moment your not paying attention.
Mind you, it's not even that difficult realizing that indeed you have strayed from course. Knowing what to do next to correct your course could not be more simple, which is just get back to doing what you were doing before you fell off. But that's not the problem. The one humongous problem that keeps us from getting back on the wagon, the one mission impossible almost everyone fails to survive, is getting over our self-inflicted wounds.
Those would be the ones we get when we beat ourselves over our heads with things like: See?! I knew this would happen. I just can't do this. I'm worthless. I failed. I should have known this from the start.

But if you find yourself in that place, be happy! Because if you never run into any trouble what so ever, you will never be the person who overcomes them.
Ergo, I've got my oatmeal breakfast and my running shoes waiting for me.
