Although the first assignment – doing Julia Cameron’s “The Artist’s Way” – did prove to be a challenge, I was still very much in control. It was self-inflicted, so to speak. By choosing Cameron’s book I knew exactly what was coming, when it was coming and how to plan stuff up to 12 weeks into the future. No so this time around.
Meet Cynthia Morris and Gerry O’Leary. She is creativity coach from Boulder, Colorado, US and he’s an architectural photographer from Dublin, Ireland. And although they never met, although they never made contact directly with each other, the creative challenges they have in stall for me somehow merged in…well, to be honest, I’m not sure. But this is what it boils down to:
OK, I can see your eyebrows and shoulders go “That’s it?” right through my computer screen. Stop that. All I ask of you is to consider it for a minute. “Create a painting that you love”
Can you see yourself doing that? Can you see yourself picking up a brush? Putting up a canvas? Picking a subject? Start from scratch, and I do mean, from scratch: without technique, without training, without any relevant knowledge about or experience with materials, colours…painting, period?
Can you see your future self take a step back from the canvas and feel truly fulfilled with what you haven’t created yet? Do you see yourself deal with your inner critic? Do you see yourself getting over yourself?
Can you deal with the idea of having to deal with what other people will think about your work? Friends? Total strangers?
This assignment couldn’t have been a more perfect if it had a big ribbon around it and was lying under a Christmas tree...
