"Create a painting that you love." OK, but whereto start? Art class, obviously. Well no, not so obviously. Because most artclasses I know, will first teach you the proper basic techniques, which isgreat, but which will also take about three years just to get the hang of it.Which, again, is great. Because it only goes to show how much time, energy andlove this form of art really deserves. And that's just to get started. Wow.
But I don't have three years to get started. I have threemonths to finish.
And so I decided to just dive in. Just before New Year, I met Mieke Siemons from KNOCKaRT, aDutch artist, living in Vianen, The Netherlands. She told me about her artclasses, which at the time, I knew, weren't the thing I was looking for. I hadto read more books, have more discussions, needed more time to contemplate, Idesperately needed to do…stuff.
But when Cythia's assignment fell into my lap, I realizedthat the answer was none of the above. When Gerry made things even worse byadding photography to the equation (I still owe you that part of theassignment, I know. Just a little more patience.) I suddenly remembered Mieke'sart class and just like that, "knowing" that her classes weren't thething I was looking for, changed to, "feeling" they were exactly whatI needed. That's life, isn't it? You spend most of it looking for something youthink you need and miss the things you really need even when they are staringyou right in the face. The things you need often aren't the things you'relooking for, if ever.
Last Tuesday I had my first class. There was the four of us,on an attic, with nothing but our curiousness having the lead over ourself-doubt by a mere nanometer. And so we dove in. We were invited tointuitively pick a post card and start interpreting and painting it from memory. Here's the original postcard.
After looking at it, putting it away and letting the brush take over, this is the result.
Looking back on it, I don't remember being satistfied with how the painting evolved or with the final result. I do remember not being there. Somewhere in the middle of the process, my three fellow students were talking to eachother and asked for my opinion. They had to "wake me up". I was painting and i hadn't even heard they were caught up in a lively debate. That was unexpected, but very welcome nonetheless.
So there you are. My very first painting. It didn't end up in the Tate Modern as my first sculpting exercise did, but it was worth every second spent on it.
On to the next class.
