Last weekend I attended a lecture and workshop at the Tate Modern, London. It was called Creative Brains and was organized by the Science Museum’s Dana Centre. It was in a sense a bit of a state of affairs on what science knows and is discovering about how the brain functions when it is being creative. Fascinating contributions by Professor Semir Zeki, Raymond Tallis, Mark Lythgoe and Lizzie Burns.
After an initial lecture and discussion on how the brain acquires knowledge and then makes sense of experiences, creates abstracts and constructs concepts, we were invited to dive into the actual experience of making art.
The floor to ceiling windowpanes on the seventh floor of the Tate became our canvasses and we were allowed to engage in 3D doodle art work of which you can find several pictures on Gaetan Lee’s Flickr pages.
It was quite the transition, getting people out of their scientific lecture mode and into a childlike doodling with colourful clay on windowpanes. Strangely enough, the transition was near seamless. Almost everyone just went along with it. Apparently I found myself in the esteemed company of quite a large number of artists. My guess is, that I was the only one not actively painting, sculpting or conceptualizing whatever it is artists paint, sculpt or conceptualize.
So there I was, on a Friday night, on the seventh floor of the Tate Modern, soaring above the river Thames, looking over the Millennium Bridge, with St. Paul’s Cathedral in the evening light, surrounded by my superiors – artistically and scientifically speaking – with my hands full of clay. As far as I’m concerned that left me with two options: to strategically retreat and watch the rest of the participants from the sidelines. Or, I could seize the opportunity and do something that only very few people, if any had ever done.
As much as I was aware that there was a significant chance that I was to produce the most hideous, meaningless, amateurish and worthless piece of cow dung ever conceived by a biped, my work would nevertheless be on exposition in the Tate Modern. It gets better. How many people can honestly say that their very first work since leaving kindergarten was allowed to be on display in one of the most prestigious museums in the world? The very thought put a smile on my face that wouldn’t go away any time soon. And so I joined in...
The funny thing however was that when we had a round table Q&A afterwards, no one in the room had realized what they had achieved. When I mentioned what I thought during the 3D doodling, the entire room lit up. People loved the idea of indeed being offered that brief moment of artistic glory. But what really got their eyes to twinkle, was the collective sudden realization of it. What a wonderful night.
Just think of it. My first year of Pinching the Ostrich. My first piece of art since the dawn of time. And already on display in the Tate Modern.(There’s that smile again)
Makes me wonder… What’s next?
