When the student is ready, the master appears. It was this thought that made me decide to start with Julia Camerons’: The Artists’ Way, so that I could first find and possibly unblock the artist within, before asking others to invest their time and energy in formulating an art related assignment or challenge for me.
The Artists’ Way did help me shift my mindset from “Who can find the time to do the things they would like to do” to “How is it possible I could never find the time to do the stuff I like.” And that in it self is a pretty important step.
To name one thing, I no longer wonder how I am supposed to get my workouts done in an already busy day. Now I wonder how I am going to wrap my busy day around my workouts. Big difference, in both mindset and results.
As April 1st approached however, I started feeling a little nervous about not 1) being able to connect to people who are active in the arts 2) being able to convince them to formulate a meaningful challenge 3) not being able to have them meet a deadline that wasn’t theirs to begin with.
Yet at the same time I felt I needed to remind myself about the proverb I started this journey with. It didn’t state that the master appears when the students’ deadline is near, but only when the student is ready. And so the question changed from: Will I make it on time, to, Am I ready?
So I decided to let it go. I had done what I set out to do this first quarter. Surely I could have done more and I could have done a number of things differently, but in al honesty; those first three months I learned a great deal about myself already, about the unpredictability of this journey, about just how little I know about anything and I suddenly realized I was only scratching the surface of whatever was lying ahead. It made the task before me seem even more and more immeasurably vast, rich and wondrous than I could possibly have predicted a mere three months ago. And somehow, that thought didn’t scare me, as I would have suspected beforehand. In fact, it felt strangely comforting.
Last weekend, was my final weekend doing The Artist’s Way. I was in London on Friday and Saturday, attending a workshop on creativity and the brain in the Tate Modern, knowing that on Monday I would not have that crucial “Connect to Anyone” challenge. Knowing that I would not have the creative challenge I had hoped to receive by now. And somehow, I felt OK with that. Honestly.
As I switched on my mobile phone Saturday morning, I heard a signal that I had a voice mail message. Probably a missed call during the workshop the night before. I called the message service and guess what…there it was, a phone call from someone I had hoped to hear from. And guess what I found in my email when I got home Saturday night? A message from someone else saying “yes” let’s do this. Instead of one creative challenge, I now had two. Right on time.
I stand corrected…not “had” two creative challenges, but “have” two creative challenges.
Am I ready for them? My mind says no. But then again, why should it be our minds’ prerogative to decide what we are ready for? The master did present himself, did he not? So my mind is allowed to speak its mind, but it doesn’t get the final word.
