2007. A young, German, female police officer called Michelle Keisewetter is found murdered. The Heilbronn police, who are on the case, make a remarkable finding. They discover the DNA of a possible suspect. This in itself is not tremendously earth shattering, but this particular DNA seems to be found in different locations and can therefore be linked to different crime scenes. No less than fourteen murders, several burglaries and robberies are attributed to this one suspect. What’s even more mind blowing, the suspect is female.
The police are baffled. They would seem to have a very rare case of a phantom, female serial killer on their hands. In no time, the mysterious killer is dubbed “the Phantom of Heilbronn” and rightfully so as she is linked to no less than 40 crimes.
Keisewetter’s murder alone will have the police spend more than 16.000 hours of overtime trying to wrap their heads around this intriguing case. They even call upon a number of professional profilers, known fortune tellers and the public, issuing a reward of 300.000 EURO for whomever can give the police that one vital tip that would lead to the arrest of the Heilbronn Phantom.
Three days ago, the Phantom’s identity was revealed. Or rather, the DNA that had all of Germany on the edge of their seats, was traced back to its originator… a female worker at the plant where the cotton swabs - used in each and every case attributed to the Heilbronn Phantom - were packaged. It was the DNA of a female worker who had, unknowingly, contaminated the instruments with which the police had gathered their mysterious DNA samples. The police had indeed been chasing a phantom.
As a result, the press and public opinion are all over this case. How can it be that these investigators never came to think of this possibility? The German media are having a field day with this, as you can imagine. And chances are that your initial reaction is also a blend of humorous disbelieve and malicious delight.
But is that – though very understandable - reaction justified? I would seem so at first because it is only natural to
1) think of the police as morons,
2) gloat over the fact that so many so-called brilliant minds had it wrong,
3) feel some or what ripped off if you are the taxpayer paying for this elaborate joke.
Right?
On the other hand, someone actually did catch the phantom in the end. And he or she did find her in the most unlikely place, right under his or her nose. Someone actually did look the other way when all the evidence pointed in an entirely different direction. Someone did figure it out.
The Heilbronn Phantom is not the proof of anyone’s stupidity, it is the proof of the limits of strict linear thinking. C follows B follows A as long as every single step in itself is proven right. This case was no different. The Phantom’s DNA traces were indeed found at the scene of the crime.
Dr. Edward De Bono, inventor of i.g. Lateral Thinking, was right on the mark when he stated that being right every step of the way, doesn’t mean you’re right in the end. Or Tom Kelley, general manager at IDEO, would probably say this is a clear case of Vuja Dé. To see something for the 10.000th time and suddenly see it in a completely different way. Dang, even Goethe knew this already: "What is hardest of all? That which seems most simple: to see with your eyes what is before your eyes”
In fact, no one is to blame here, but our own addiction to the untouchable, one dimensional "truth" of linear thinking. We are so hooked on this fanatic believe in strict logical, linearity that anyone stumbling upon it’s flaws, is ridiculed, as quite a few German police persons can testify to.
And, let’s not forget, there’s also our insatiable hunger for sensation, blood and gore. Wouldn’t you agree that the idea of a mysterious, never-before-seen case of a female serial killer, is so much more appealing than…well…anything that is not a mysterious, never-before-seen case of a female serial killer?
In fact it is so darn appealing that no single newspaper, no single fortune teller or even person in the street, with the added motivation of a 300.000 EURO cheque, came up with the idea or even cared to look for different angles. These are the same people that are laughing their heads off right this minute, “knowing” that the police are a bunch of exiled morons from the planet Zogg.
The fact that Michelle Keisewetter’s murderer hasn’t been caught yet, is a terrible thing. But it could get worse. We could decide to start pointing fingers. You know, find the one person to blame, to look for someone to take the fall. That way, we can all retire to the safe sanctity of our current mindsets. We can find comfort in the fact that we found the idiot who was to blame, and that that idiot was not us. We could leave it at that.
It is exactly that what would be even unspeakably worse than going on the falls lead of a contaminated swab. That right there would be the smoking gun of why we get it wrong time and time and time again.
No single person got it wrong, doing and thinking what we have all been taught to do and think. In fact the police, the media and the public all did a brilliant job doing exactly that. We thought linearly!
Linear thinking is a tremendously useful, powerful, meaningful and commendable way of knowing. But it isn’t the hallmark of human achievement. It is just another way of knowing. Period. Logically we must come to that conclusion and logically we had better start acting on it.
