It’s been a good week so far. Somehow the inspiration day is attended last weekend created momentum of some sort. I’ve had very interesting conversations, was contacted several times about “Pinching the Ostrich” with intriguing questions and got very sensible feedback and ideas. Great! Do keep that coming people!
There’s only one that gives me a sense of unease. I don’t yet have the creative challenge in the Arts I need by April 1st when The Artist’s Way comes to an end. I’ve been in contact with several tremendously interesting artists from very different walks of life and active in various fields, many of them genuinely excited by the idea behind and willing to explore their potential part in the Pinching the Ostrich journey: to give me an assignment that will make me understand why it is what they do.
There’s only one problem with active, involved and busy professional artists…they are so active, involved and busy that none of them seems to be able to find the time of formulating a challenge.
Granted, that formulating such a task would take some time. Seriously. How would you try to make a layman such as me experience what it is you do and why you do it? What challenge would you come up with, knowing that I would only have three months to complete it. Realizing that there’s a life I’m leading beside the things you could come up with.
That’s not easy. And I can’t do it for them either. There’s no way I myself could come up with an assignment that would encapsulate the meaning, passion and devotion of any professional artist, since it’s their meaning, their passion and their devotion. Learning what it’s like to see things through their eyes is not something I can put together in their place. I’m still confident and hopeful though and working hard to convince a couple of people to help me make that deadline.
Although accepting a firm “No” is also inevitable part of this journey of course.
In the meantime, I came up with an idea concerning my De Bono certification in lateral thinking. I should have had a certification test on February 20th, but I didn’t. I felt something was missing. I could have done this with any group, at any venue, just as long as there’s a master trainer around to see me do what it is I need to do. But that just didn’t feel right. And so I decided to ponder on that for a little while.
This week I decided to do the following: I’m asking anyone to apply for a free, 3 hour intro training in De Bono lateral thinking. A training that will be held at the house of Mary Lou Leistikow, De Bono Master Trainer in the Netherlands at the cost of the catering. However, the attendee should be aware that the certification test will take place in the midst of a Pinching the Ostrich experience.
Meaning that the day will start with an inspirational warm-up and end with a moment of co-creation. The people that would be able to make it over there – and places are seriously limited – need to be willing to actively share their drives, dreams and ambitions with anyone there, be it close relative or perfect strager.
Furthermore, even though it’s a free training, I do expect to be paid. Meaning, that if a participant finds that the experience was worth his/her while, he/she is invited to “pay” me with that what inspires him/her. That could be a book, a poem, a dream they never dared mentioning, a home made cake they only bake on special occasions…anything they value for its positive contribution to whatever it contributed to in their lives, and are willing to part from. That may sound weird and even plain lame, soft, fluffy or whatever you want to call it, the thing is…it works.
The date hasn’t been set yet. I will be May, that much we do know. And anyone willing to join in must be able to make it to the heart of The Netherlands and have a convincing argument why he/she thinks he/she is simply invaluable to have a around that day. So do feel free to pinch me if you like.
My point is, I don’t just want to certify that day, I want it to be a wholeheartedly felt celebration of ideas, dreams and ambitions between kindred spirits. Which is something we should do way more often anyway.
