Living a creative life is not always about the big gestures, the bold statements or the ambitious goals, far from it. It’s mostly about the little things, even seemingly insignificant. Like this little thing; Once a week, for one night, the electricity is switched off.
No lights, no TV, no radio, no appliances and all battery powered devices such as cell phones are switched off. It’s all quiet with only the light of candles and tea lights glimmering.
What do you do when all you have is the faint light of flames and each other’s company? You have actual conversations, you talk…and you listen, you truly, genuinely listen.
You don’t have to follow a course to understand the rules. There’s no new abstract model to master or book to read up front. It doesn’t cost you anything (besides a few cheap candles). It saves on your electricity bill and is CO2 friendly. How simple can things be?
And so we play cards, monopoly, trivial pursuit, scrabble…and we talk, make plans, share ideas, discuss things… In fact it is so terribly simple, that it is tempting to dismiss it as irrelevant, silly, overly romantic, or whatever word, that would make one feel comfortable not having to sit across his/her partner and just be there with and for each other.
Admittedly, it does seem kind of soft and lame. Until you give it an honest chance. I promise you, it’s a breath of fresh air. It slows everything down. It slows YOU down. Don’t worry, there will be plenty of catching up and running after stuff waiting for you when morning breaks. But not just then.
Try it. You’d be surprised how much energy a little candle light contains.
