I have this book sitting on my bookshelf: 30.000 Years of Art, The Story of Human Creativity across time and space. It’s at least 8 pounds heavy with no less than 1.000 works of art from across different cultures, civilizations and countries.
Just let that sink in for a minute: 30.000 years of Art. Can you wrap your head around that? My guess is, not really. Well, try to wrap your head around this: I don’t know anything about art. As in, not really. I wouldn’t know the difference between a mannequin doll and the Venus de Milo. So in a very real way, I have been missing out on the past 30.000 years.
All that time artists have been fascinated by nature, colors, shapes, human relations, concepts, beauty, harmony, conflict, emotions...the list goes on. In fact, many artists are more than just fascinated. They live and breath the arts. Something has gotten under their skin that is bigger than life to them. It calls them and calls upon them. It won’t leave them alone. It brings them both tremedous joy and unspeakable frustration. It brings the rest of us just about every facet of the emotional spectrum our senses and hearts can take.
I am not going to sit by the sideline to miss out on year 30.001.
The first year of Pinching the Ostrich is mostly dedicated to the arts and to the people that sculpt, dance, compose, paint, write, sing, film, draw or answer whatever call it is that they feel they must answer.
My first self-inflicted assignment is to connect with the artist that is already inside me. As much as I’m hoping to be able to connect to “real” artists, I feel I owe them at least the respect of my best effort to get in touch with my own artist. This morning I got up at 7 AM (Hey, on January 1st, that’s nothing to sneeze at) to start with my daily morning pages. Those morning pages are a daily mandatory activity when following the “The Artist’s Way, A course in Discovering and Recovering your Creative Self” by Julia Cameron. In short, The Artist’s Way is a twelve week program with daily and weekly assignments to (re)surface your artistic side. The second thing I just started with is “The Creative License, Giving Yourself Permission To Be The Artist You Truly Are” by Danny Gregory. In short, anyone can draw, you just need to remember it.
Do I endorse these books and programs? No. I just do them. I’m sure you’re old and wise enough to make up your own mind about these works. I am just interested in is getting myself prepared for what is to come. You see, I firmly believe that when the student is ready, the teacher (read: artist) will present him/herself.
Else said, it’s up to me to take the first step. And this step started today and ends March 26th.
